Big Day Out: Blackies
Newport Beach, CA - 4/14/08
Hot weather dropped in on Southern California yesterday and Jack’s Big Day Out presented by Oakley was there to kick off summer early. The high pressure brought blue skies and 80-degree temps...and small waves.Despite the less than ideal conditions, the peninsula rats came out in force to surf for bragging rights and tons of prizes courtesy of Oakley, Jack’s surfboards, and Transworld. The format was simple: show up early, register for free, mow some breakfast and shred whatever Mother Nature supplied for waves.
The weather and conditions made if feel more like Deerfield pier than Blackies, but the battle tested locals went to work. Several approaches were used--retro boards, special fishes, and some no-leash twin fin shortboards, all in an attempt to impress the judges.
The beach filled to capacity by 10am and boogey boarders and Michael Phelps wannabees made water patrol almost necessary. In the end, smiles were had all around and the finalists got to take a trip through the prize alley.
The next Big Day Out will be June 1st in Huntington Beach.
Thanks to Jack’s, Oakley, Lost, CytoMax, Ocean Minded, O’Neill, Nike 6.0, Billabong, Globe and Pro Lite for supporting Jack's Big Day Out!
