Jen Wins Freeskiing Tour
Alyeska, Alaska - 4/30/08
The six-stop Subaru US Freeskiing Series and three-stop Freeskiing World Tour wrapped up earlier this month at Alyeska Resort, Alaska. Oakley’s Jennifer Ashton of Whistler, BC, won her third overall title and was crowned women’s World Tour Champion. We caught up with Jen back at her base in Whistler…How did the season go for you?
It turned out to be a very interesting season for me. I actually wasn't planning on competing at all. I got talked into going to Crested Butte for the first Tour stop by a couple of girls in the Whistler Freeride Club who I coach. They wanted to compete in the junior category. So, I went down with them and ended up winning. Winning in Crested Butte put me in a great position to win the whole Tour so I decided to go for it.
What does this win mean to you?
I won the Tour in 2002 and 2003. Since then, I have only been going to the competitions that I feel like going to. This was my first year back doing the whole tour. I'm extremely happy to have won it for the third time.
What was the competition like this year?
I was very impressed with how the girls were skiing this year. There are a whole bunch of young ripping girls coming to the competitions and it’s very exciting to see.
What contest was your favorite?
Crested Butte was definitely my favorite. Winning helps.
Scariest moment of the season?
The scariest and saddest moment of my season was watching John Nicoletta fall and die in his competition run in Alaska.
What are you looking forward to next season?
I'm hoping to be invited to the Nissan Freeride World Tour. This is a new invite-only tour with five stops around the world and great prize money. I would also like to do a couple of ski trips with my boyfriend, Eric Hjorleifson.
