Masters of Vision

To win, you really have to give everything of yourself. If you come in second, you’re going to wish you could’ve found something more.

I like the mentality: Oakley just does what’s right. It’s not what’s fashionable — not what might look cool. It’s form following function. They do what works. And anything that works for me is going to become part of my arsenal. It adds to what I’m doing, protecting my most vital assets. It’s the one thing that’s been consistent for me from the time I started riding my bike competitively. It began when I was 14 — and I’ve been wearing them through my entire career.

The passion for pedaling originated with a yearning for independence. And the freedom he found on the bike was unlike anything he’d experienced in his life. The feeling of going fast coupled with the pride of self-propulsion masked in the relative silence unique to a bike is still with him today. It’s what drives him to the front of the line.

Interview

Man and machine:

It started when I was two — but there are no training wheels anymore. Plain and simple, it’s just pure love and enjoyment for me. And there’s really nothing like it. Even now, after all these years, it’s still the same.

Improving over time:

That’s been my goal since turning pro: improving. It’s what motivates me. It’s what my work ethic is built around. I know my strengths and I see areas to improve. Consistency is the ultimate goal. Some people say that I don’t have incredible days. But I don’t see that as a weakness — I don’t have many bad days, either. I think that’s because my greatest strength is staying power. An ability to stick — to hang in there regardless of how I feel or what the field is doing. When I’m being attacked on an incline, it’s not easy. But I’m hanging in there no matter what.

Propelled by passion:

It’s the driving force between and behind all great feats. It’s what you really need to achieve anything. To me, it’s the most important factor because a lot of people have the ability. But if they don’t have the passion, they usually don’t achieve. I have a true passion for my job, for the Tour and succeeding there. To keep it fresh? No — I’ve never lost it for a second.

Confident in competition:

It’s the result of putting in all the preparation. To be there at the highest level, you have to be confident. And the only way to feel it is to put everything you have into what you’re doing at the moment. I like to be tested. I think I’m at my best when I’m pressured — against the odds, fighting through fatigue. And that’s what competition is: a test. I’ve got to find out if I’m good enough to pass.
