Masters of Vision
Pain is worth it. You have to go as hard as you can, for as long as you can.
Frank Schleck / Road Cycling
I have a weakness with my eyes — I don’t see well without a prescription. And I can’t wear contacts. So a lot of times when I was younger, I’d get headaches. But since I started wearing Oakley prescription glasses, I stopped having the headaches because my eyes don’t have to work as hard as before. They make my vision better at the races, where I’ve really got to be focused.
Bloodlines. That’s what racing bikes is to the Schleck family name: a birthright. It started when his grandfather burned pavement with Eddie Merckx back in the day. It trickled down to Frank, who wanted to take his older brother’s accomplishments one step further. And look out world: Frank’s little bro’s on the rise. His racing ethos are tied to his simple, eloquent life slogan: yearning to have little boy dreams. Ones big enough to fulfill the need to extend the family ties.
Interview
The secret to your success:
Having fun while I’m riding my bike. Sitting there racing with my buddies, feeling really good with my team. We’re not just teammates. We’re friends. We’re each other’s biggest fans. You always have to remember where you came from, where your family is. And they’re my family.
Best part of racing for a living:
I have the opportunity to make a career out of my hobby. Riding my bike was a childhood dream — I never thought that I could reach that level. Now, that hobby — my passion — is my work. That makes it easier to focus on what it takes to go forward — faster — every year.
___________ gets me on the bike everyday:
Passion. Somehow, we’re just freaks. Every day, we’re in the mountains killing each other. And long before the finish line, you reach a point where you’re totally spent. But the next day, as soon as the race starts, you just go. We’re crazy. The harder you go, the more pain you have. And in a way…the better it is.
It’s worth it because:
That feeling, when you’re out there training in the rain and then you come home to hit the showers. You’ve trained your ass off… but you’re never satisfied with yourself. Because you know that anybody else could be stronger than you on a given day. And even when I’m winning, I’m suffering like a motherf*****. It’s just a little more mental motivation.
